A 20-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing another woman on a busy Cairns street on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the incident on the Cairns Esplanade at around 5.30pm where a 39-year-old woman was found with a stab wound to the neck.

First aid was administered and she was taken to Cairns Hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

Isabella Aneta Cisarova, from Cairns North, was charged with attempted murder and faced the Cairns Magistrates Court today.

The police say that both women know each other.

More witnesses, the police say

Senior Sergeant Matt Stevens said when police arrived people who saw the incident were providing first aid.

“I think we have a number of witnesses to the incident,” he said.

“As the esplanade is at that time of day, lots of members of the public are close by.

“It’s a bit of a gruesome scene, considering there’s a bit of blood there.

“We thank the people who have provided the assistance they have and we will be contacting them and making sure everyone is safe and well.”

A witness, Tim, told the ABC it was scary but emergency services responded quickly.

“It was pretty crazy,” he said.

“Evening on the esplanade, people [were] go for a walk and stuff, so they were pretty busy.”

Investigations underway

Senior Sergeant Stevens said details such as the alleged weapon and possible reason for the altercation were still being determined.

“We suspect there may be a bladed weapon. But again, that’s still part of the investigation,” he said.

“If there are any potential witnesses who the police have not spoken to we would love them to either call Crime Stoppers or Policelink.

“Every witness is vital to the investigation at this stage.”

The alleged perpetrator is due back in court at the end of January.
