The BC Coroners Service has confirmed that Sunday night’s accident was a double fatality.

“The BC Coroners Service was notified and is investigating two deaths from one incident,” said Ryan Panton, manager of strategic communications and media relations.

Highway 1 at Ford Road was closed in both directions for almost seven hours on Sunday evening.

Two cars and a semi truck collided on Highway 1 and Kirkpatrick Road in Tappen just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday night.

According to BC Emergency Health Services, two people were transported to hospital in serious condition.

It is unknown whether the two people died at the scene.

DriveBC reports that the scene of the accident at Tappen was cleared at 02.00


UPDATE: 9:55 p.m

Highway 1 remains closed in both directions at Ford Road.

“Expected time of reopening [is] 2 a.m.,” Drive BC said in a tweet.

A detour is in effect along Highway 97, Highway 97A and Highway 97B.

DriveBC reports that Highway 1 is closed to all traffic except for emergency vehicles at Ford Road, two kilometers west of Tappen.

An assessment is underway.

A detour is in effect along Highway 97, Highway 97A and Highway 97B.

Members of the Shuswap Road Report on Facebook indicate the highway will be closed for several hours.

A resident reports that flappers are circling vehicles and says it may be closed for eight hours.

DriveBC is reporting a crash on Highway 1 near the Tappen area.

“Reports of a vehicle incident affecting both directions west of Salmon Arm,” said a tweet from DriveBC.

Crews are on their way.

At this time, it is unknown how many cars are involved or whether there are any injuries.
