Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall are due to separate after six years.
The media mogul declared himself “the happiest man in the world” when he married the former supermodel in London in March 2016.
But the couple must divorce, the New York Times has reported, citing two people with knowledge of the decision.
It would be the fourth divorce for the 91-year-old media titan.
There were no immediate details about a settlement between him and 65-year-old Hall, who was previously in a long-term relationship with Sir Mick Jagger – with whom she has four children.
However, it was not expected to affect the ownership of Murdoch’s international business empire.
His family’s shares in the companies founded by Murdoch are in a managed trust.
The trust’s voting rights are shared with his four eldest children – Lachlan, Elisabeth, James and Prudence.
Murdoch and his family are worth $ 17.7 billion, according to Forbes.
