Nurses will stage their first national strike over two days in the Christmas fortnight, accusing ministers of “picking strike” by refusing to negotiate.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) announced that its members will go on strike across England, Wales and Northern Ireland on 15 and 20 December.

Thousands of patients are likely to have routine appointments and planned operations cancelled. Acute and urgent care will continue.

Pat Cullenthe general secretary of the RCN, said: “Ministers have had more than two weeks since we confirmed that our members felt such injustice that they wanted to strike for the first time. My offer of formal negotiations was rejected and instead ministers have opted strike. They have the power and the means to stop this
