Written by Javed Iqbal

Officials say they believe they know everyone involved in Northfield homicides

Mother, children each died of single gunshot wound

Good afternoon everyone. Um Again, my name is Jeff Ward, I think many of us have met before, but for those who haven’t G E. O. F. F. R. E. Y. Ward is W. ***. R. D. I am *** senior Assistant Attorney general and the Chief of the Criminal Justice Bureau here at the Attorney General’s office. I will not be able to provide much in the way of additional information beyond the press release we issued last night, which I’m happy to summarize at this point. Um but we can tell you that today, the investigation has revealed that on august 3rd at approximately 11 33 am, officers responded to 56 Wethersfield Drive in Northfield New Hampshire in response to *** 911 call for service. The officers that arrived at that residence discovered three deceased individuals inside the residence. Their autopsies were conducted yesterday and they were identified as you are aware as cassandra Sweeney and her two Children, Benjamin and mason, ages four and one. Doctor Duval, the chief medical examiner for the state of New Hampshire determined that the cause of death in each of those uh were gunshot wounds in the manner of death was homicide in each of those three cases. The investigation remains active and ongoing Uh through through through the night and through the day today um investigators at this point believe they have identified all of the involved parties and as *** result, I do not believe there is any danger to the public in general at this time. Um with that again, I’m happy to answer questions to the extent I can. Um, but we are, I will stress within the 1st 48 hours of this investigation. And so the information I can provide is limited at this point. So I can’t comment specifically on on *** suspect. But when I say all involved parties, I mean anyone who was involved in the incident, correct? So you see the public shouldn’t worry. But yet there’s *** mother and two kids shot to death in their home. Why shouldn’t people work? So people would need to be worried if there if, if we had not identified all the parties involved, people may need to be worried if we believe somebody was on the loose or unaccounted for. Where we believe we’ve identified all of the parties. Um, and we don’t believe anyone is unaccounted, we’ll try that one again. Um, so you know what I can say with respect to that is we’ve identified all the involved parties meaning they are accounted for. And so there’s no reason to believe that the public in general is in any sort of danger from, say, *** perpetrator of this offense. We do not believe this is *** random event, no connection whatsoever. The boys, her husband is he witnesses he personal interest Hollywood you describe. So what I can say about that is is um, the father is somebody we have been in contact with who has been very cooperative and helpful in this investigation. Um, Our victim witness Advocate um, is working with him and his family and providing services and he’s obviously beyond devastated as *** result of these crimes investigation. Go further into the family involved Other members of the family. In terms of what? So the investigation again, we’re within the 1st 48 hours. But what I can say generally is any homicide investigation is going to leave no stone unturned um with respect to the victims and victims known associates and family in the same with any suspects or possible perpetrators. So I can’t comment on that at this point in the investigation. That is correct. No one has been arrested or charged in this matter. I can’t give you any more specifics about the 911 call. Obviously that’s information that we have but at this point in the investigation with the investigation ongoing. That’s information we’re not releasing at this point Wednesday. I don’t want to get into the details in terms of the time. But obviously Um prior to 11:30 AM victims were found inside the residence. I’m not going to provide any specifics with respect to that. Um, I can’t comment on that. I wouldn’t be able to comment on that. Again, details that I wouldn’t provide at this stage in the investigation. Single gunshot wound is to each correct. So, you know, I can’t comment on suspects period. What I can tell you is, what I said before is that we have been in contact with the husband that he has been very cooperative and helpful in this investigation. And he is working with our victim witness Uh services coordinator. We are providing services to his to him and his family through our office of victim witness assistance. So that’s not not not information that I would release at this point. So that as you’re aware in any case is not something that we can predict. You know, what I can stress again is that we’re in the 1st 48 hours of this investigation as I think many of you have seen there’s still active work ongoing at the scene. So we’re still we’re still early in this investigation. Um That’s not what I’m suggesting is we know all the parties involved. I’m not going to provide the specifics on that only because of where we are in the investigation. So again I and and and what I what I’ve said, I have not said we know who did it. I have said we have identified all of the parties involved. Um We’re within the 1st 48 hours of this investigation. What I can speak to generally in any homicide investigation is these are complex investigations. Often time complex. Every time you ask *** question, some big truck goes by. Uh yeah, no mike mike takes care of that. Um In any homicide investigation we’re dealing with complex scenes and complex scenarios. Um you know we have to await autopsy is being done. We have to await forensic testing that does not move as quickly as it does on television. Um, you know, in terms of getting back forensic testing results and things like that. So generally speaking, in any homicide investigation, you know, how quickly something progresses to an arrest or *** charge is going to vary. We’re only within 48 hours here, there’s still work being done on the case at the scene. And so, you know, we’re, we’re still moving very quickly in terms of any timeline, but I can’t predict on when an arrest or charges could come. That’s not something I’d be able to to share or reveal at this point. What’s that? So what I can tell you is that the medical examiner’s finding was that the cause of death was *** gunshot wound in the manner of death was homicide, homicide is defined as they use it at the medical examiner’s office as the killing of one person by another. Sure. With respect to switch gears to concord that has remained active and ongoing. Um, you know, we’ve been, uh, in fact, um, you know, in touch with those folks, uh, all week this week as well. In addition to having other cases that were working when I say, those folks concord Police department were still looking for and if not identified, um, the individual depicted in the sketch and whose physical description that we have provided previously, publicly, still looking for information, any information from the public with respect to that individual who may know or seen that individual. And and and seeing again, you know, sometimes memories come back to folks and had seen anything suspicious or concerning in that area, in the area of those trails, but that that investigation remains very active as well. Not at this point, the person that you are looking for in the current case is no longer in this area. So getting back to Northfield, um, what we believe, what what I can tell you, um, I would not I would not draw that conclusion from what I have said is that we have identified all of the parties and we don’t believe that there’s any danger to the public. It was it was for all three, all three victims. Turner’s anyone I guess. I’m not sure I follow. Okay, so, you know, everybody who’s been involved, Are they all you know, at home and already been questioned and free to do whatever they want to do or are they being questioned and being held somewhere and just not been charged formally? So, you know, I think, I think what, what I can, what I can best say with respect to that is that there has been no arrest or charge in connection with these homicides. But again, reiterate that we believe we’ve identified everyone involved. So obviously, you know, I’ve been talking about 48 hours were within, you know, first hour with respect to that. So, you know what, I can tell you at this point is we have, uh, prosecutors responding down there, Members of my office to work with the Nashville Police Department to investigate that suspicious death mailer. So I don’t have any of those specifics. Um, what I can tell you is that it was in *** business outside of business in Nashville, about Northfield Northfield, mother of two little Children, to just talk about your office and your prosecutors and investigators and what’s this? So, you know, we have to approach these, uh, from, from our law enforcement perspective, um, from the, from the perspective of getting the investigation done, finding the perpetrator and bringing that perpetrator to justice. There’s obviously *** human element here though, and these are, these are, you know, devastating crimes and what we focus on in those moments are, or how devastating they are for the families and making sure that we’re doing our job and not resting until we can we can find *** perpetrator. We can bring the perpetrator to justice. Um, certainly, you know, personnel wise, there’s *** strain on our office when there are *** number of, of, of homicides in *** row. Uh, and we’ve had *** run of it this year to say the least, and now and now this week. Um, but we have the personnel to cover these. Um, we work with the different agencies who have the personnel to cover these and we just keep going would be reasonable conclusion that if you’ve spoken to all the parties involved, three who died, um, again, I’m not gonna I’m not gonna, I guess fuel that sort of speculation. I’m gonna stick to the statements that I’ve made with respect to the fact that we’ve identified all the parties involved. So, I don’t know. I don’t pronounce prognosticate in any case. You know, I’m confident that we’ve identified the parties, and that’s what I’ll stick to at this point. So, you know, the message to the public with respect to this case is that there’s no no no reason to be concerned for their safety, um, that there’s no reason to believe that they’re in any danger in connection with this case. But certainly this type of violence is devastating to *** family and devastating to the community. So, um, again, that’s not something I would comment on um, at this point in an investigation. Thank you all
