Tthe by-elections held at each end of the country should be a test of Boris Johnson’s personal sympathy and will indicate to Tory MPs whether their leader is still a winner.

The votes are now counted in Wakefield in West Yorkshire and Tiverton & Honiton in Devon. Johnson has said he “has absolutely no doubt that the people of this country and the people of Wakefield, and the people of Tiverton and Honiton, would much rather vote for a solid Conservative government than for a Labor party, their founders and aides in the Liberal Democrats, the karmic chameleons of British politics ”.

Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, said his party “could be on the brink of a historic victory”.
