The man tried to climb a drainpipe on the side of an urban building on Clarence Place near Rundle Mall around noon.
He came up 12 meters before the pipe broke, causing him to plunge more than two floors down the walkway.
Ambulances, police and firefighters rushed to the scene while his friends then shocked.
The young man from Adelaide’s inner suburbs remains at the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries.
