A man has died while in police custody after crashing a car through a fence in Melbourne’s north.
Victoria Police said it received reports that a car had crashed through a fence and into the front garden of a property on Murphy Street in Preston at around 4am on Sunday.
“Upon arrival, police observed the male inside the vehicle behaving erratically before exiting the vehicle and confronting police,” a spokesman said in a statement.
“Officers attempted to restrain the agitated man before he appeared to be unresponsive.
“The attending officers immediately called for medical assistance and performed CPR on the man, but he could not be revived.”
The homicide squad will investigate the death and is still investigating the circumstances.
Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation in accordance with protocol when a person dies in police custody.
