A man has been charged with the murder of his 89-year-old grandmother in south London, Met Police said.

Verushan Manoharan, 31, was charged Wednesday night.

The victim – who has been named Sakunthala Francis – had been stabbed to death in a home on Brigstock Road in Thornton Heath around 9.20pm on Tuesday.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Manoharan is due to appear in custody in Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Her family has been informed and is being supported by specialists.

Metropolitan Police said an autopsy will take place in due course.

Investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened, but no one else is wanted in connection with her death at present.
