Hundreds of Australians are calling for The Projects co-host Lisa Wilkinson to be fired after her Logies speech debacle causes a rape case delayed.
Wilkinson has been under heavy fire after her speech at the awards ceremony on Sunday night caused the trial of Bruce Lehrmann, the man accused of raping Brittany Higgins, to be delayed until October.
ACT Supreme Court Justice Lucy McCallum said Wilkinson’s speech ‘completely obliterated’ the line between allegation and guilt in the alleged sexual assault in the House of Commons in Canberra on March 22, 2019.
The whole saga is ironic when Wilkinson himself – in August 2021 – begged ‘everyone to respect what is at stake here’.
Even colleagues in the media have been critical of Wilkinson, 62, with former 10-year-old Tim Bailey telling her to ‘pull her head in’ and suggest she should have just got her statue and ‘f * ** of’.
Social media users have also been quick to judge Wilkinson, urging Network 10, her employer, to fire her.
“Then come Network 10, it’s definitely time to go up and fire Lisa Wilkinson,” one wrote.
“How can you get your brand and your network tainted by her actions and arrogance.
“She represents everything she hates and stands for.”
Another was even more forthright, saying, “She should be charged with contempt of court … 10 should fire her.”
“Lisa Wilkinson chooses self-promotion over a fair trial for both parties, this is what you call support for violence against women, and you were warned that this could happen, shame on you,” wrote another.
“When should Channel 10 expect your termination?”
But it was not one-way traffic where a user suggested a more balanced view of Wilkinson’s handling of the speech.
“She has been faithful in her support of Mrs Higgins and other aggrieved women, but she is an experienced diary and should have known that what she said could have caused legal problems,” they wrote.
The drama unfolded when it emerged that Wilkinson and 10 had approached the president of the Australian Bar Association, Dr. Matthew Collins, to represent them in any potential lawsuit.
