Fire bans continue for northeast Avalon

Written by Javed Iqbal

St. Johns Regional Fire Department has made the decision to continue with the fire ban currently in place.

The ban includes St. John’s, Mount Pearl and Paradise. Included in the ban are backyard fire pits, chimineas, charcoal grills and open fires. Propane BBQs and fire pits are allowed.

The ban applies until further notice.

The decision was made after consultation with other fire departments in northeast Avalon, as well as the provincial government.

The department says that given the high temperatures and low rainfall, there is still a high concern about fire risk.

Those using propane fire pits and grills are reminded to keep a hose or fire extinguisher handy and follow the manufacturer’s requirements.

The department says it is monitoring the situation and will provide updates on any changes to the ban.
