Covid-19 levels continue to rise in all four nations of the UK, with the increase likely to be caused by infections compatible with Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5, the Office for National Statistics has said.

Last week, an estimated 1.7 million people in private households had the virus, up 23% from 1.4 million previous week.

It is the highest estimate of total infections since the end of April, but is still well below the record of 4.9 million reached at the end of March.
