Cleaner door in Woolworths supermarket in Newcastle

A cleaner has died at a Woolworths supermarket in the city Newcastle suburb of Jesmond this morning.

Emergency services responded to reports that a member of staff had been injured at the supermarket on Blue Gum Road at around 7.30am today.

Paramedics went to the supermarket but found the woman dead at the scene.

NSW Police said their initial investigation suggested there were no suspicious circumstances, but revealed nothing else about her cause of death.

“Officers from Newcastle Police District have established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” NSW Police said.

A Woolworths spokesman said it was providing support to the woman’s family and team members.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and our thoughts are with the woman’s loved ones at this difficult time,” the spokesman said.

“We are assisting SafeWork NSW and NSW Police as well as working with our contract cleaning partner.”

The store is currently closed while police carry out their investigation

The woman was employed by a third-party cleaning company contracted to provide cleaning services at the store.
